AN IDEA TO REDUCE ANXIETY

Penelope Snow, LCSW

detoxify your news feed

It's been a long time since I made the daily news part of my own day due to the emotionally-charged style of for-profit, corporate-owned news outlets...which covers pretty much all of the easily available news channels and sites.

When working with a client who is experiencing chronic anxiety symptoms, I often recommend a "new-hiatus", one or two weeks of abstinence from all news feeds. If clients can't or won't abstain, I urge them to moderate their information diet in healthy ways. Less biased, more neutral spins on news and easy access to reference sources make SmartHerNews a healthy portion of information, easily digested, energizing rather than depleting.

The site’s creator and primary journalist, Jenna Lee Babin, also deliberately presents herself in a "less-produced" (read: less makeup, more authentic) version. This news source presents visually with a sharp, easy to read flip-card system that is fun to navigate. Images, especially graphic or dramatic ones, are rarely part of the routine presentation, which makes taking in the news more efficient due to less distractions on-screen.

Smart journalism with integrity, presented by a real person who is able to share more brain with less lipstick, what's not to like?!

AN IDEA ABOUT THE DIVISION OF MIND AND BODY

Penelope Snow, LCSW

Undivided: Mind and Body

"There are maps through your bones and skin, to the way you've felt and the way you've been." -Christopher Poindexter, Poet

The mind/body division that is so often assumed, woven into our perspective about mental health and medical health, misleads us, encumbers us.

Our thoughts and our brain, our emotions and our body, who we are and how we behave, these things are never separate.

Never.

Therapy that incorporates a larger understanding, a sense of this human tapestry, is truly powerful. Change your thoughts, change your feelings, change your behavior, change your biology...you can't change one without changing all.
